On February 22, 1918 was born a perfectly normal boy named Robert Wadlow in Alton, Illinois (USA).The baby weighed 3.8 kilos and had a normal height. But Harold and Addie Wadlow, his parents never imagine that a few years later would become the tallest man on the planet . A record that still stands.
Its growth was normal until age four. Then he began to draw attention to fast growing. At age 8 he measured 1.83 m. At 13, 2.13m. At 14 he became the highest scout boy in the world with 2.24 m .At that age used footwear of number 25 US, 60 in Europe.
Wadlow was a quiet and affable young which led him to be called “gentle giant” . He enjoyed photography and playing guitar until finally her hands were too big to do both. In this picture you can see with his brothers at age 17 in 1935.
Its large size and continued growth in adulthood was caused by a hypertrophy of the pituitary gland.
Over time the size started to give problems needed a cane to walk and had lost feeling in extremities. Despite these difficulties, Wadlow never used a wheelchair.
He broke the record for the tallest man in the world in 1937 when he arrived at 2, 54 m.

After graduating from high school Robert toured with the Ringling Brothers Circus and then toured the US promoting the International Shoe Company which gave special shoes size 37AA size.
On June 27, 1940, only eighteen days before his death, he was measured by doctors Charles and Cyril MacBryde Washington University in St. Louis, giving a height of 2.72 m.
On July 4, 1940, while participating in the “Manistee National Forest” festival, a bad footstep hurt his ankle, causing a blister which then caused an infection.

He was hospitalized and doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery but his condition worsened and on July 15, 1940 died in his sleep at the age of 22 years.
More than 30,000 people attended his funeral on July 19. The coffin measured 3 meters long, weighed half a ton and required twelve men to be shouldered.
He was buried in a crypt solid concrete it is believed that his family wanted to ensure that his body not be desecrated or stolen after his death.
A statue of Wadlow actual size lies in the university Alton Avenue, opposite the Alton Museum of Art and History. The statue was erected in 1986 by his hometown in his honor.
